Day 23. Green St-Sarah Street. circa 1835.
Green Street-Sarah Street, these two photos are showing the front and back of the same building. In 1761 the land was given to trustees and the rent from it was to pay the wages of a village school teacher. In 1830 the trustees sold the land and these cottages were built. The land also had a Toll House and the Village 'Lock up' (jail). Originally they were back to back houses built in about 1835 as 6 separate dwellings. They were condemned in 1939 and were due for demolition when the second world war broke out. The owner persuaded the Borough Council to halt the demolition and if he was allowed to knock through making  two houses into one they could be used for refugees from the war.  This he did and they are now three quite desirable residences. The street in front and behind are private for use of the residents only and must be maintained by them. The toilets, originally out side,  were two block of three, one for the front cottages and one for the back. They were often communal and you could very well be sat next to your neighbour whilst you went about your business. Those are now gone and the toilets are inside the houses. If you look closely at the photos you will see soil pipes front and back of the cottages indicating they have a bathroom with toilet and a separate toilet.

  1. Cool how these two shots look like a panorama together. Nicely done.

  2. I thought it was a panorama too - works well either way.
