Day 22. Edenfield Parish Church. circa 1778.
Although the date stone on the east wall says GR111 1778, parts of the tower dates back to 1614, and the church bell was made by John Scott of Wigan in 1654.  A church was hardly ever built on it's own , miles from nowhere, so the village of Edenfield was already established by the time this church was erected in the 17th century. It was part of the Parish of Bury some 8 miles to the south. Before you tell me, the tower is not vertical it is 23 inches out of true. When you look at the construction of the tower at some time it has been repaired and the top section, to the right of the belfry window, has been replaced and an effort to return it to vertical can be seen, the wall therefore has a 'dog leg' in it. The rainwater pipe emphasises this  aberation.
The GR111 on the date stone is from king George Rex 111 who reigned from 1760 to 1820.

  1. Ah, see, before reading the George REx III I thought it was the GR III rating for the year it was listed but now that I think of it, probably weren't listing anything that far back. I had a brain fart; what can i see. Cool to see the old buildings and nice sky too!
