Day 21, St Mary's and All Saints Church, Goodshaw. circa 1828.

There was a Church on this site in 1542, being replaced by the second Church in 1794. It was a chapel of the neighbouring parish of Newchurch and in 1837 Queen Victoria made it a parish in it's own right. By 1902 the Church needed extensive repairs and it was argued it should be rebuilt nearer the village of Crawshawbooth. in the end it was decided to restore it where it was and this is the 3rd Church where the 1st church was in 1542. The datestone on the wall between the windows states 1838.

    A lovely old church. And all those really old gravestones. It looks like the bricks on the left hand side of the church are newer than the rest.

      Yes the gravestones are for real, I didn't look at the dates on them but I will next time I go that way. There is an ongoing maintenance programme and the stones (not bricks) could very well be new. The stained glass windows now have a perspect cover over them to avoid damage by Vandalism.

    What beautiful big windows! I really like the benches outside on the grass as well.
