Day 26, Workers Terraces. circa early 19th century.
These terraces built for the cotton workers in the very early 19th century. They could possibly have been back to back for the upper levels and a separate accommodation for the bottom level. There are many examples we have seen of this type of housing. Now they are 1 house of three levels. Note the stone supports for the walkway round the building. the middle level is at street level at the front. Both these terraces stand east-west with a ramped road between. Now fitted with modern plumbing the privies would have stood where the trees are at present(now demolished) a block of several shared by all the tenants.
Certainly reminds me how lucky most of us are today. Indoor plumbing - can't imagine living without it. What a tough life they had. Thanks for sharing about these homes. We have to look beyond the stone and imagine the lives they had.
ReplyDeleteCool how you put those two shot together, they almost look like one and it made me look twice to be sure :).
ReplyDeleteIt does indeed make us remember how lucky we are and how we take things (like indoor plumbing!) for granted.
