Day 14, Wear Foot Cottages. circa 1829.
These little cottages were built 1829. Originally weavers Cottages and were situated in the midst of three cotton mills. Whittakers Mill, of yesterdays posting, was the other side of the trees in the background. A mill directly opposite and a mill to the right side and set back across the river, which runs behind the cottages. There is a strong possibility that these were 'back to back' cottages as the workers could not afford such a big house on weavers wages. I haven't been able to find anyone who would know this for sure. Today they are three cottages.
The light exterior is a departure from the more expensive stone houses but still look homey and cozy. Nice!
ReplyDeleteVery nice, I like the lines formed by the roof and the perspective is great.
ReplyDeleteVery nice. I like the little wild looking plant on the right hand side. It looks like it would take over the building if given half a chance.
