Day 17. Workers Cottage. circa 1830.
Today we have a double photo to do the house justice. This was a leather workers cottage or cottages, there are 2 living accomodations here. The top picture shows the front of the building which was 2 shops at street level. the upper room was one long room that was from gable to gable with a fireplace at each end. and was the leatherworkers workshop. One of the shop or maybe both sold the goods to the general public. They were possibly sadlers or just leather good shops. there was a store room/workshop in the roof and the steps up the side of the building were 'teckin in steps' in local dialect (taking in steps, to us) where the leather was taken into the workshop without having to go through the shop. Two families lived on the premises in the basement, as seen in  the second picture, which were below ground at the front. The building has now been converted to 2 living houses and extra chimneys added in the centre.

  1. It this were built today, people would live up top and any rooms for the leather would certainly be in the basement, not the other way around. Well done!

  2. Those stairs look very steep, it must have been hard work to carry the leather up and down.

  3. I like how it's 2 storeys from the front yet bigger at the back. Very deceiving!
